The FIGalpha transcript is specific to ovaries (and to some degree testis) and antibodies against FIGalpha supershift a protein complex from ovaries that binds the E-box (CANNTG) located approximately 200 bp upstream of the transcription start sites of Zona Pellucida glycoprotein genes Zp1, Zp2 and Zp3. Full activation of a reporter construct containing 1.5 kb of the Zp2 promoter is dependent on the E-box as well as cotransfection of both E12 and Figalpha, in a transient cotransfection assay. This gene is also known as FIGalpha. It is an HLH protein identified in a search for factors that associate physically with the E12 isoform of E2A (PMID: 9362457).
